After many emails and phone calls, I managed to receive $2400 in financial aid from AFS!! I was also awarded a $750 academic scholarship and $250 from a scholarship that my teacher nominated me for. So, I have received $3400 in scholarships from AFS.
However, as these scholarships do not go through my blog, they do not show up on the ChipIn meter. So, even though it does not show the $3400 on my blog, I now only need $4600, not $8000, as the meter to the left shows.
When deciding who would receive the academic awards, the AFS scholarship commitee looks at grades and involvement in extracurricular activities, as well as community service. I get "A's" in school, and I am involved in many clubs including Spanish Club, Free The Children, and Key Club. Key Club is an international community service club that is sponsored by and linked to our local Kiwanis group. I have been in Key Club for two years. This year, I am an officer and have a community service job almost every week.
In addition to scholarships from AFS, I am working on getting scholarships from The LIVESTRONG Foundation, Kiwanis, and Gold Country Youth Education and Benefits Foundation.
I'll update with more information on these scholarships as soon as I find out more!
