Kicking Off My AFS Experience

My name is Stephanie Hedger, I am a junior at Nevada Union High School, and I am going on foreign exchange with AFS Intercultural Programs this February. I am planning on going to Chile for a semester (February-July). I have wanted to go on foreign exchange since my freshman year of high school because I love to travel and want to be completely immersed in a foreign culture and the Spanish language. While in Chile, I hope to gain a better understanding of the Chilean culture, create unforgettable memories, and make friendships with my host family and friends that I will have forever. I also hope to teach Chileans about the American culture.

Even though AFS is a non-profit organization, it isn't cheap to study abroad. In order to fulfill my dream, I need to raise about $9000 for tuition. My family isn't able to pay for the tuition, so I am fundraising for my foreign exchange costs. I have been babysitting around my community, helping my dad out with his work, planning Midnight Movies at the local movie theater, and applying for local scholarships. I have recieved $1000 in academic scholarships from AFS, which still leaves about $8000. I am hoping that my family, friends, and community will help me to raise the rest of the tuition costs. Thank you so much, donations of any amout are greatly appreciated.
